HOMILY OF 5TH TUESDAY OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: MARY, MOTHER OF AFRICA

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

It was during the wedding feast at Cana that Jesus performed his first public miracle, turning water into wine, demonstrating his divine power. Mary, the mother of Jesus, played a vital role during the event. She expressed her faith in Jesus by bringing the problem of the wine shortage to his attention, and she instructed the servants to obey his commands. Mary’s words, “Do whatever he tells you,” serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of obedience and faith in Jesus’s authority.

Her words not only demonstrate her unwavering faith in Jesus but also serve as a call to action for others to submit to his authority and teachings. April 30th is set aside in some parts of Africa to celebrate Mary as “Our Lady of Africa” (Mama Africa). This celebration is closely linked with a statue that depicts Mary as a black woman. Just as Mary is revered as the Mother of Christ in Christian theology, the title “Mother of Africa” symbolizes her maternal care and intercession for the continent and its people.

In many African cultures, motherhood holds a sacred and central place, embodying nurturing, protection, and guidance. By extension, Mary’s role as the “Mother of Africa” is understood as encompassing these qualities on a spiritual level, offering comfort, support, and intercession to African believers. How often do we turn to Mary as a source of solace and strength, seeking her maternal intercession and guidance?
