5TH SUNDAY HOMILY – IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]

THEME: “EVERYBODY IS LOOKING FOR YOU”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 5th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. B). When a person excels in what he does, people tend to search for such a person till they find him. If a doctor or a lawyer is an outstanding figure in his/her area of specialization, people naturally look for him/her to solve their problems. Such is the same with Jesus who is an excellent figure and the giant of our salvation. He cured all kinds of diseases and cast out demons . People began to look for him everywhere to find solution to their problems. “Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, “Everybody is looking for you” (Mk. 1:29-39).

Jesus is not an electronic preacher. His good works were outstanding. People began to look for him everywhere because they saw a man preaching with authority and even, the unclean spirits obey him. His words were filled with wisdom and integrity. When he preached the Good News those possessed by evil spirits were set free. For this reason, Paul says, “I should be punished if l did not preach it” (1Cor. 9:16 – 19.22-23).

There is healing power in the Gospel preached by Jesus. This healing power is still active in the church today. We should build up strong faith in God in order to witness his miracles. Job experienced difficulties in life. He recounts his ordeal with the evil one. “Lying in bed l wonder, when will it be day?” (Job. 7:1-4. 6-7). It was faith that sustained his hope. Let us excel in all we do so that those in need can approach us for help. Happy Sunday.
