5TH SUNDAY: HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: God is close to the Broken Hearted!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Job 7:1-4, 6-7; Ps. 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6; 1 Cor. 9:16-19,22-23; Mark 1:29-39

The first reading, from the Book of Job, presents us with the profound sufferings and lamentations of Job. Job’s life had been filled with blessings, but suddenly he experienced immense hardship and loss. He questions the purpose of his suffering and cries out to God for relief. This reading reminds us that suffering is an inevitable part of the human experience. We all face challenges, pain, and loss at different points in our lives. But the psalmist echoes a message of comfort and hope, reminding us that God is near to the brokenhearted and heals those who are wounded.

Friends in today’s Gospel reading, we witness Jesus’ ministry of healing and preaching. He enters Simon Peter’s house and finds his mother-in-law sick with a fever. Jesus takes her by the hand, raises her up, and heals her. News of Jesus’ miraculous healings spreads rapidly, and people from all around come to Him seeking restoration and healing. Jesus responds to their needs with compassion and brings healing to their bodies and souls. Today, we’re called to realise that God is present in our suffering, offering us comfort and healing. In our day-to-day lives, we may encounter various forms of suffering, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual; but we must turn to God in our times of distress, seeking solace and strength in His love and presence.

Good morning dear. Have an amazing Sunday today.
