6TH SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: He touched me!

BY: Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor

(Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; Ps 32:1-2, 5, 11R. (7); 1 Cor 10:31-11:1; Mk.1:40-45)

In an increasingly individualistic society, the power of touch as a form of communication is becoming less prevalent due to a variety of cultural and societal concerns. These concerns range from fear of being seen as inappropriate or predatory, to being labelled as promiscuous or even gay. This disconnection from physical touch may be contributing to a perceived lack of compassion, empathy, and care for others, particularly the sick and the elderly. In contrast, the gospel presents the story of Jesus healing a man with leprosy, a highly contagious and stigmatized disease, through physical touch, breaking societal norms and purity laws of the time.

This story serves as a reminder of the power of touch, compassion, and healing. As we approach the Lenten season, we are encouraged to approach Jesus with faith, seeking cleansing and healing from our own sins. More than this, we are also called to extend this healing touch to others in our society who are marginalized or rejected, regardless of their perceived ‘uncleanness’. Like Jesus, we should not shy away from showing compassion and bringing healing to others, doing so for the glory of God, as St. Paul advises. This challenges us to break down barriers of judgement and fear and instead, foster an environment of understanding, acceptance, and love.

Good morning dear, and Happy Sunday!
