HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28 2022.

Albert Schweitzer in his book titled ‘The Quest of the Historical Jesus’ says Jesus came to us “As one who is unknown, without a name, as of old, by the lake-side, he came to those men who knew him not. He speaks to us the same word, ‘Follow thou me!’ and sets us to the tasks which he has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey him, whether they be wise or simple, he will reveal himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings, which they shall pass through in his fellowship, and as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who he is.” Only a few people understand the implication of following him. A man said to him, ‘Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). To follow Jesus is not a bed of roses, but requires detachment, and openness to living a frugal lifestyle, commitment, sacrifice, inconveniences, faithfulness, simplicity, and poverty. Some are attracted to the priesthood, religious life, or pastoral ministry because they want to live comfortably. They later realise that comfort has a corresponding responsibility which is service and total commitment to preaching the word and imitating the life of Christ. Have you discovered the joy of following Jesus wholeheartedly?
