FRIDAY: HOMILY FOR 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME {YEAR B}

THEME: Have faith!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

I Sam.8:4-7,10-22; Mark 2:1-12

How often do we miss the point about God’s kingdom? Very often, I must say. We miss the point whenever we see signs and wonders as ends in themselves. Years ago, I was caught in the Lagos/Ibadan expressway for hours, for reasons that a very popular Church was having its first Friday Vigil. Now it’s wonderful that people should be so interested in a Vigil as to literally cause a grid lock on all major roads in Lagos. But it’s rather sad that despite that, we seldom have any faith, and our country continues to advance in many major vices.

Friends, wasn’t it lack of faith in God that made the Israelites demand for a King in today’s first reading? Even after Samuel’s counsel, they insisted on wanting a King because they wanted to be like other Nations. But in today’s gospel, Jesus rewarded the faith of those who brought him the paralytic from an opening in the roof by forgiving the man’s sins. In truth, forgiveness of sins is much more important than making the man walk. But to rebuke the scribes who had doubts, Jesus went ahead to physically strengthen the man’s limbs as well. So rather than run after miracles, we should be more concerned about the forgiveness of our sins and how we can be better human beings, and better Christians. If we can do this, our world would be so much better.

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend ahead.
