FRIDAY HOMILY FOR 2ND WEEK IN ADVENT – YEAR B

THEME: THIS GENERATION.

BY: FR. KARABARI PAUL

“To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’’

Jesus in the Gospel of today (Matthew 11:16-19) watches in frustration how men and women have become hardened in sin, and He says, “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

John and Jesus came for the same purpose; to turn men and women from evil to God. They both preached the same message of repentance. However, the approaches were different. John was isolated and lived an austere lifestyle. Jesus was friendly and accessible to all. The people who never accepted John the Baptist had the option to accept Jesus. But they were both cruelly rejected.

Indifference to the Gospel counts against us. The Gospel is the message of life. God desires that we accept it and be saved. Unfortunately, people of our generation are more dangerously indifferent than that of Jesus. We are imprisoned in our comfort zones of sins that any message that tends to draw us to God irritates us. It is the reason why people mostly go to where they tell them exactly what they want to hear.

The Church is not an entertainment centre. It is more like a hospital where we check ourselves and do surgery where necessary. Building churches everywhere with no positive changes in the lives of those who attend them makes these churches entertainment centres. John didn’t come to entertain his people. He came to preach repentance. Jesus didn’t come to entertain his audience. He came to bring men and women to God.

Does God still accept us? Does He not look from above and ask, “What should I do for you to make you committed to Me that I have not done?” Are we part of the indifferent generation? Do we still complain about everything and forget about what God is offering us? Does the message of the Gospel make any difference in our lives? We all need to reflect on this. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, bless us and our household always through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
