HOMILY OF 5TH THURSDAY OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THAT YOUR JOY MAY BE COMPLETE!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Acts 15:7-21; John 15:9-11

Have you even been dealt with by guilt? Not the guilt that comes before sin; the one that wrenches your soul after you’ve fallen into temptation? Yes! You have an idea why sin is capable of killing our Joy. One of the sins the council of Jerusalem specifically cautioned the early Christians to avoid was FORNICATION. We can add ADULTERY. Together, these sins have wrecked marriages and broken hearts too many to be counted. These sins have killed many babies and prevented others from being conceived. In fact, these sins have destroyed whole families.

Friends, there is another sin that destroys the family of the Church –”schism”, which is as a result of another grave sin – “resistance of the known truth”. It was because of these sins that Bishop Athanasius underwent many sufferings and was in exile for a total of 17 years. His condemnation of Arianism; the teaching that Jesus Christ is not God since he was created by the Father, led some to accuse him of treason and murder, embezzlement and sacrilege. How can we say we love God if we fail to keep his commandments? How can we be at peace when we can’t control our raging sexual urges and desires? How can our Joy be complete if we continue to fight and act against the truth?

God bless your day ahead. St. Athanasius, pray for us!
