FRIDAY: HOMILY FOR FRIDAY  2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: “At once”… they followed Him

BY: Fr. Justus Oruh.

(a) They left everything at once and followed Jesus. “At once” they did that. “What I mean, is that the time has become limited” 1 Cor. 7. Yes, they needed to do that at once “for the time is already fullfilled and the Kingdom of God is near. (Mk.1). It takes 3 days to walk across Nineveh but already on Jonah’s first-day walk, they immediately repented. No time. It is time to leave everything BEHIND and follow Him.

(b) They left a lot of things behind. -old profession, their know-how, their titles, the nets, the fishes, the other left even their Father. What a strong call. One thing significant in the call of the brothers in both cases, was: they never asked Jesus any question when He said, Follow me! But to where? Jesus Himself is the fullfillment and the end of the journey of Life. Seeing Jesus, the destination is already met. Nothing goes before Him, nothing stays in front of Him. He does not just lead the way but is the Way. All we have behind us and we behind Jesus.

(c) We are to leave behind, all our fears, our mistakes of the past, our anxieties old self and sin. We are to leave behind our old way of seeing our occupation and Job. From Fishermen to Fishers of men. The former got its name from the individual persons doing the jobs, the later from the recipients, the human beings benefitting from the job. Consider the “of men” -the possession which reshapes our view of carrying out our duty. Our Jobs should be oriented to the well-being of the human beings. Let the ultimate joy and fulfillment of our jobs be the good services they render to our fellow human beings for the sake of God more than the pay that accrue from them. This Jesus tell us today to do, follow me! It’s urgent, at once we need to.
