HOMILY FOR 4TH SUNDAY IN ADVENT – YEAR B

THEME: Let God Build your House

BY: Fr Anthony Chukwuebuka Ohaekwusi

The reason many people feel insecure is a lack of trust. When you trust the person you’re dealing with, you don’t bother letting them into your sensitive places. When you trust your lawyer, you tell him the real story without hiding anything, when you trust your banker, you allow him access to your money. When you trust your spouse, you let him/her have your home.

A successful businessman hired a security guard to guard his large store, but didn’t let him near his safe. So he gave him the keys to the entire building except the safe and said: “This safe is personal to me.” A few days later, the safe was broken into, and when he confronted the security guard to express his disappointment, the young man replied: “How can I protect what I don’t have access to? You can’t say you trust and still hold something back at the same time.

The readings this Sunday which tell the stories leading up to the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), show that God cannot build our house unless we trust Him to have access to our lives. David was a man blessed by God, who trusted God in all his expeditions, and God lifted him from following sheep to leading His people. He was a man after God’s own heart. God did not reject his offer to build Him a house, but appreciated his willing and devoted heart, by giving us a great lesson of faith. The lesson is that if we are willing to give God a place in our lives, God will be determined to build our own house. Sometimes we can be as comfortable as David and feel that we no longer need God. Worse, we may think that by believing, we are doing God a favour. But the story of our salvation, brought to life by the angel Gabriel in the annunciation to Mary, shows that God does us a favour when we let Him into our lives. He builds the home of those who trust Him to direct their lives. Mary listened and accepted God’s grace in trust, and God took control of her life. She allowed God to enter, and the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. Her life changed from a betrothed girl to the most highly favoured by God. How ready are we to listen and trust God to take control and put our lives on the right path? God builds our house when we profess in trust: “let it be done to me according to your word.”

Remain lifted and do have a great Christmas Celebrations
