HOMILY FOR 4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: “AND HIS TEACHING MADE A DEEP IMPRESSION ON THEM”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 4th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. B). Jesus came to save humanity from slavery to sin and worldly affairs. He spoke audibly to the people with authority. His words were so gracious “and his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the Scribes, he taught them with authority”(Mk. 1:21-28). There is power in the Word of God.

Jesus went about doing good. He did not allow himself to be overwhelmed by worldly affairs. He is epitomized in the book of Deuteronomy thus; “Moses said to the people: “Your God will raise up for you a prophet like myself, from among yourselves, from your own brothers, to him you must listen”(Deut. 18:15-20). God sent us his own son to lift us up. The Word of God disturbs those who do evil. They would refuse to listen to what is right and just. One who speaks with authority speaks the truth but people would not listen.

This idea of speaking with authority shows that the one who speaks is well prepared. This is why Paul says: “I would like to see you free from all worry. An unmarried man can devote himself to the Lord’s affairs, all he need worry about is pleasing the Lord”(1Cor.7:32-35). This refers to the practice of celibacy and consecrated life in the church. Let us listen to those chosen by God to preach the Goodnews among us. We continue to pray that our ears be opened to listen to the word of God and put it into practice. Happy Sunday.
