MONDAY: HOMILY FOR BAPTISM OF THE LORD – YEAR B

THEME: Be washed!

By: Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor

Is. 55:1-11; Is. 12:2-3; 1 Jn. 5:1-9; Mk. 1:7-11

The baptism of Jesus carries significant messages for us today. Firstly, it underscores the importance of acknowledging Jesus’ divine authority and mission. Despite the initial questions raised about His identity, His divinity and mission are confirmed by the presence of the Father and the Holy Ghost during His baptism. Through this act, Jesus delineates His mission – to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, deliver captives, restore sight to the blind, liberate the oppressed, and proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. This is indeed an awe-inspiring message of hope.

Secondly, Jesus’ baptism serves as a strong reminder of the need for repentance and faith in the gospel in our daily lives. Even though Jesus was sinless and in no need of baptism, He humbled Himself to undergo this ceremony, highlighting the significance of purification and repentance. It also reminds us of the joy of recommitting to our baptismal promises, a process through which we can renew our faith and re-experience the righteousness and joy in the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we are encouraged to constantly revisit our spiritual commitments and seek the cleansing power of Jesus, being washed in the blood of the Lamb, and continually drawing from the wells of salvation.

Good morning dear. Happy Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. And welcome to Ordinary Time!
