HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: TREASURES ON EARTH!

BY: Benedict Agbo (Rev Fr)

* 2 Cor 11: 18 – 30, Matt 6: 19 – 23.

Your treasure is whatever you consider precious and valuable and on which we think we could fall back in time of need. Anything that occupies our attention and efforts and makes us to depend upon it is our treasure. It therefore helps to have one’s heart in the right place. If our heart’s desires is in worldly possessions, we will be possessed by them and get ruined by them; If our heart’s desires is in lustful pleasures…in alcohol… in smoking weeds…we get ruined by them. But if our heart’s desires is in Jesus, we are saved by him. Sometime ago, I was interviewing a young teenager to find out what he gains from smoking weed ( marijuana) and his reply was simple : ‘Joy and happiness’. I found it very difficult convincing him otherwise.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

Jesus says in today’s gospel: ‘Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth’. Happiness comes not from amassing wealth or from satisfying the flesh but from giving away and satisfying the spirit. Money is a good servant but a dangerous master. Any indulgence we get from the flesh only makes us slaves to that habit, whether it is sex, alcohol, food, smoking or whatever. There are so many things in life that money canot buy; love, knowledge, truth, happiness and real security. We must have the discipline of detachment; the discipline of studying, giving and enduring. An old gravestone said of the dead man: ‘What I spent I had; what I saved I lost. What I gave I have’. It is our generosity that will make us happy both in this life and in the next. May God bless you today!
