HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: TWO BECOME ONE.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA

Wise people say “A happy man marries the girl he loves, but a happier man loves the girl he marries.” This implies that the happier person continues to love the spouse in every condition of life. The Pharisees had a wrong notion of marriage. They understood marriage asa contract that could be easily dissolved. Jesus asked them, Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one” (Matthew 19:45).

Therefore, Jesus reiterates the divine prpose of marriage, which is a union between a man and a woman. More still, unity of marriage means that a husband can have only one wife and the wife only one husband. Jesus did not say the three, four, five, or six become one flesh, but the two become one flesh. The Chrch teaches that the two essential properties of marriage are Unity and Indissolubility.

This simply means that in marriage the husband and wife become one (Unity) and that in marriage they establish an unbreakable bond throughout their life (indissolubility), which cannot be put asunder by anyone. The stronger their relationship is with God, the stronger their union becomes. Do we remember that slogan that says “A family that prays together stays together?”
