HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: CONFIDENCE OF FAITH.

In 1855, a preacher, Joseph M. Scriven wrote a poem to comfort his mother. This poem was turned into a faith inspiring song: “What a friend we have in Jesus; all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry; everything to God in prayer.” We should not hesitate to carry our burdens, sickness, and pains to Jesus in faith through prayers.

It was the confidence of faith that made a ruler come and kneel before Jesus and invite him to come and raise his daughter who just died. He said to Jesus, “My daughter just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live” (Matthew 9:18). Similarly, a strong faith motivated a woman who had suffered haemorrhage (bleeding) for twelve years to say, “If only I can touch his garment, I shall be made well” (Matthew 9:21).

Physical and spiritual healing requires faith in God and Jesus says, “Everything is possible to one who has faith” (Mark 9:23). To have faith implies submitting totally to God and believing in his power to save. Whenever we are surrounded and overwhelmed by pains, troubles, grief, sin, sickness, terror, and tough conditions of life, Jesus tells us “Do not be afraid; Just have faith” (Mark 5:36). Do we always believe that no circumstance is greater than the power of Jesus?
