HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: WONDER AND APPRECIATION.

A deep spiritual life is filled with a sense of awesome wonder about the beauty of creation, life, mysteries, and miracles. The Classic Christian song by Carl Boberg How Great Thou Art opens with the words “0 Lord my God when Im in awesome wonder.. God’s wonderful work manifested when Jesus made a mute (dumb) man speak. The crowds wondered and marvelled at this spectacular miracle and they said, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel” (Matthew 9:33).

The Pharisees who had lost their sense of wonder and appreciation for God’s marvelous works falsely accused Jesus of casting the devil by the prince of demons. They accused Jesus of being an agent of the devil because they were too blind and proud to see the power of God at work in Jesus.

An African Proverb says, “Even when you dance on the water your critics will accuse you of raising dust.” Fr. Devasia Joseph, SSP succincty describes the two responses to the miracle which Jesus performed. He sees the response of the crowd as The Positive response of wonder” and the reaction of the Pharisees as “The negative reaction of unbelief and destructive criticism.” Do we have a sense of wonder and do we appreciate the marvellous work of God in our lives, in others, and around us?
