THEME: MUSTARD: GRADUAL PROCESS.

BY: FR. GERALD M. MUSA.

Wise people say, “It’s the ugly caterpillar that turns into a beautiful butterfly after seasons.” It takes a gradual process for the caterpillar to turn into a butterfly. Nigerians ove the expression Sharp-Sharp which means getting it done quickly, promptly, immediately, instantaneously, and with a bang, The expression sharp-sharp is associated with a mentality that says success, growth, wealth and achievement must be instant. Sharp-sharp mentality abhors gradualness and the patience of process.

Jesus challenges the sharp-sharp mentality in the parable of the Mustard Seed. He says the kingdom of God is The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31-32). The parable describes the process of growth of the Mustard Seed and how the ordinary gradually becomes extraordinary.

This gradual process shows how the kingdom and wisdom of God operate. Many great ideas started as mustard seeds and grew little by little to great success. Many great people had a humble beginning and grew to achieve greater heights through grace, perseverance, and patience. How patient are we when things are not going as fast as we want? How patient are we with the slow process of success and growth?
