THEME: SET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT

LUKE 10:17-24

When a sage tells us to put “First thing first,” he means we should set our priorities right. Our series of actions tell us if we are setting our priorities right or not. According to the Indian sage, Mahatma Gandhi, “Action expresses priorities.” After Jesus sent out the 70 others to go out to preach and perform miracles, they returned joyfully and reported their achievements and accomplishments.

They were happy because as they performed miracles they were shot into fame; they became popular suddenly. They said to Jesus, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” (Luke 10:17). Jesus reassured them of the enormous powers he had given to them to overcome the schemes of the devil. He made an additional statement which is very instructive. He said to them, “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). By this statement Jesus meant they must not be so lost in performing miracles and forget the ultimate goal and victory of life which is the salvation of their souls and eternal life with God. In other words, they should set their priorities right by thinking less about earthly accomplishments, success and fame that have a tendency to distract and focus on being in the state of grace and walking towards the salvation of the soul.

How often are we carried away by fame, power, and success?
