HOMILY FOR THE 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

THEME: Leave Judgements to God.

BY: Fr. Justus Oruma.

(a) The book of Wisdom reveals God who judges with tranquility, with great favour, with great wisdom and “giving room for repentance” while judging. God is patient with us. He gives time, he sees all things, he knows the secrets in every heart, for this reasons, leave Judgements to God.

(b) These attributes are seen clearly in the tree parables of Jesus that tell us “how the Kingdom of God is like” The Son of Man sowed the good seed but the enemy the devil came in the darkness to sow the bad seed- the seed of discord, the seed of hatred and disunity. In the judgment of man, the servants meant; “let us uproot them immediately”. In the judgment of God, “No…” The mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds. In the judgment of man:- what can this small thing offer? It is neglected. The last parable tells of the patience with the few measures meal “untill the whole were leavened.

(c) Theses parable in brief deal onTheodicy. There has been the question; why evil in the world? These parables clearly tell the origin of evil in the world: Jesus says; “the enemy has done this”. It tells us too the reason why God permits evil in the world; “No…perhaps gathering up the weed, you root up the wheat also together with it.” Therefore when God permits evil that has been introduced by the free wills of the enemy, it is for good reasons he permits it: for the good of the good ones and for the grace and time of repentance for the evil ones, but this grace for repentance ends by the end of time, when all things shall be gathered. We are to see each time of our life as a gift and grace of God to become the wheat. We are not to join the enemy in sowing and spreading the seed of evil, the seed of disunity, and wrong teachings in the family, in the community and in the media. We are not also to judge others rashly; see how ready the servants were to uproot the evil seeds immediately without thinking of the consequences on the good seeds, but God judges with patients. He knows how to work all things to good. Let us learn us also to be patient with others. Sometimes we judge and condemn others without love, without patience and without prudence; sometimes we are just happy to expose and to tell of the crimes of others everywhere, not even to save the good but to use the occasion only to destroy and bring the image of the one to mud. In so doing we end up sowing the evil seeds like the enemy. God in judgment gives room for repentance. If we just judge, we must judge with love and wisdom.
