HOMILY FOR THE 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

THEME: “TRULY, YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD.”

This is the 19th Sunday in ordinary time. Faith is God’s gift that enables us to believe without doubting whatever God has revealed. Thus, Elijah waited patiently in faith until God revealed himself to him at Mount Horeb (Sinai). The prophet experienced many natural disasters while waiting. He noticed that God does not dwell in chaotic circumstances like storms or earthquakes or fire. God comes with a gentle breeze ( Cf.1Kgs. 19:9.11-13). The situations of war and terrorism in the world today do not depict the presence of God. They show human wickedness and criminality. God is a faithful God. He does not change.

Noticing the lack of faith among the Romans Paul writes: “What I want to say is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ – it is the truth – my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too”(Rom. 9:2-5). With faith in God nations can avoid wars and maintain peace. With faith broken families can reconcile and love shall reign again. With faith we can witness a new heaven and a new earth.

Jesus saw the lack of faith exhibited by his disciples while he was walking on the lake. Even after being with them for a long time and doing many miracles in their midst, they lacked faith. Peter wanted to demonstrate his faith by asking Jesus, “if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.” In faith Peter started walking on the lake like Jesus, but due to human frailty he doubted and began drowning. The Lord rescued him when he called out to him. Their faith became strong again when Jesus calmed down the storm. They said, “Truly, you are the Son of God”(Mtt. 14:22-33). With faith let us say, Thank you Jesus, I believe, you are my Lord and my God! Happy Sunday.
