Each time we look back at our lives reflecting, one thought that always come to mind is those good old days when things were beautiful, when life was sweet. We also always think of those things that should have happened, that should be happening but they are not happening because of one thing or the other. Then, we begin to wonder where we got it wrong and how possible for us to correct it.

Our first reading of today is in the light of such reminiscent mood about how good God is and what the people are missing for not being close to God. Hence, Isaiah on a really sober and apologetic mode begged God to return them to the good times so that everything can be normalised once more. He concludes with a phrase that we are the clay, he is the Potter. Yoruba will say “omo eni o ki n buruburu, ka fi fun ekun pa je- once child cannot be so bad that we give him or her to the lion. That is why in the gospel, Jesus want us to be awake and alive to maintain our place before God.
My dear brothers, as we begin the season of Advent, it is pertinent for us to realize that we would be missing a lot if we should sleep off from our Christian commitment. We would be doing ourselves a lot of harm when we remain disobedient. We would be better off to realize that we have no where to go to or run to except to God. Advent is a time of coming to God waiting for him to do again in our time the great things of Old. This will only be possible if we are awake, alive and ready to allow him to mold us. May the Lord come to renew and remold us. Amen.
