SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING – YEAR A HOMILY

By: Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

THEME: Before the King of Kings!

Ez. 34:11-12, 15-17; Ps. 23:1-3, 5-6; 1 Cor.15:20-26, 28; Matt. 25:31-46.

The Solemnity of Christ the King is a liturgical feast in the Catholic Church that celebrates the universal kingship of Jesus Christ. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 through his encyclical letter “Quas Primas.” The feast was established in response to growing secularism and the denial of Christ’s authority in various aspects of society. In Quas Primas, Pope Pius XI emphasised the fact that Christ reigns above all earthly rulers. While temporal powers will fade away, Christ’s reign and his kingdom remain eternal.

The story is often told of how King George II of England was overcome with emotion when he first heard Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. The man could not remain seated when he heard the words “King of Kings…” He realised that One greater than himself was being praised. Since then, the tradition of standing up for this chorus caught on. Hence, today’s second reading reminds us that Christ continues to be King until all authorities and powers are put under his feet, including death.

In today’s first reading, we see that Christ isn’t a militant King. He is one who goes out of his way to gently Shepherd us, personally seeking the lost, bringing back the stray, bandaging the wounded and making the weak strong. Friends, by virtue of our baptism, we all share in the kingly office of Christ. We too are therefore called to show leadership and good example to those who look up to us in our various environments. In the end, the Lord will ask us to give account as we see in the gospel reading. Will you be among the sheep or the goats? As we go around today showing Jesus Christ to the world, may we ponder these things in our hearts, and pray for grace to put Jesus Christ first in all we do and say, Amen.

Good morning dear. Happy Solemnity of Christ the King!
