THEME: AND THEIR EYES WERE OPENED.

This is the 3rd Sunday of Easter. The events of the Holy Week and Easter celebrations are still fresh in our memories. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is still a breaking news! Jesus appeared to two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. For those who do not believe in Christ, it’s just a nightmare being propagated by Christians. To those who believe, it’s a real story that opens our eyes towards recognizimg Jesus in our midst. Just the same way the two disciples’ eyes were opened and they recognized him at the breaking of bread.(Lk. 24:13-35). The breaking of bread here signifies love, caring for one another, Thanksgiving and healing of wounds.

Peter’s boldness on the day of Pentecost affirms the apostles’ resolve to follow Christ inspite of the Jewish threats to their lives. He openly expressed their readiness to prove that Jesus lives on forever. “You killed him, but God raised him to life” (Acts 2:14. 22-33). Such boldness from Peter was the power of the Holy Spirit speaking through him. No one can stop the fluidity of God’s miraculous power. You too, must be bold in following Christ. Stop being timid, be bold in faith and good works!

Truly, the disciples’ eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus. This epitomizes what “David said of him: I saw the Lord before me always, for with him at my right hand nothing can shake me.” Thus, the Lord walks with us as we move. We are not alone in our earthly journey. He is our companion as we walk through the valleys and shadows of death. We shall fear no evil. Peter encourages us thus: “Remember, the ransom that was paid to free you from the useless way of life .. ” (1Pt. 1:17-21). The useless way of life is living in fear. Let us be bold and ask the Lord to open our eyes now to recognize him in the poor, the marginalized, the needy and those denied justice in our midst. Happy Sunday.
