Mary’s “immaculate heart” speaks of her inner life, the center of who she is. Mary’s heart is immaculate because everything about her, including her intentions, personality, and character, is totally pure. In fact, her whole inner life is all about God. Mary doesn’t go back and forth between knowing what is right and doing the wrong thing. She only stays true to God.

Jesus Himself teaches: “The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile. For from the heart come evil thoughts: murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, and blasphemy” (Matthew 15:18–19). In other words, they all begin with the heart.

So, the condition of the human heart is like a tiny version of the whole situation in our world. And where the heart goes, the whole world goes.

Pope John Paul II linked today’s spiritual and physical battles to what he called the “culture of death.” It is the outright murder of the human soul as well as the disfigurement of the human heart. Because we have not protected our hearts from the enemy’s assaults—things like cold indifference, a profound lack of belief in God, and a profound hatred for those who are different than us—the world is falling into greater sin and wickedness.

To counteract the so-called “culture of death” in our day and age, God has given us His most beloved Son’s mother as our own mother. Mary shows us what it means to give our whole hearts to God and to Him alone.

Pope Benedict XVI reflects that when Mary said definitively “yes” to God’s will, this “word of her heart” changed the course of human history by bringing the Savior into the world. Similarly, our world would change for the better if each of us took this call to live for God alone seriously and intentionally. At the end, may the Immaculate Heart of Mary triumph.
