HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF 3RD WEEK OF EASTER.

THEME  LIVING BREAD.

Bread remains a popular component of breakfast, despite its rising cost. Bread is found in every country of the world, and Jesus used it to feed a multitude. Mahatma Gandhi observes “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them exceptin the form of bread.” Jesus says, I am the Living Bread,” presenting himself as food for his followers. He further explains that the bread gives eternal life, unlike the Manna of the Old Testament, which gave only temporal satisfaction.

The communion bread may appear ordinary, visible, tangible, physical, and material, but it satisfies and sustains the soul forever and helps receivers to lose the weight of sin. The (Eucharist) is an outward sign of inward grace ordained by Jesus Christ, through which grace is given to the soul.’ As people who are spiritually hungry and malnourished, we need this bread to satisfy the deep hunger of the soul. Participating actively in the Holy Eucharist (Mass) gives us a special opportunity to listen to the Word of God, sing, pray and offer thanksgiving to God. Above all, in receiving this bread, we experience oneness with Christ in communion and so, we can confidently repeat the words of St. Paul: It is no longer I who lives, but Christ living in me” (Galatians 2:20). Have we discovered our spiritual hunger and how strong is our yearning for his spiritual bread?
