He who has no friend has God, says an Egyptian proverb. We run to God when we find ourselves in desperate situations. Therefore, it is not hard for us to understand the distress of the Canaanite woman who came to Jesus to seek rgent help for her daughter who was severely possessed by a demon. Jesus’ response came in four layers:

First, he did not say a word to her, but she kept pleading. Second, after responding with silence, he said to her: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The woman persisted. Third, he gave her a shocking response, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it at the dogs.” She refused to be deterred by these words that appear offensive and with a good sense of humour she replied: Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” In the end, Jesus was fascinated by her invincible faith and said to her: “0 woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”

As he uttered these words her daughter was healed. Sometimes, it appears God is ignoring our prayers, but like this woman, our faith keeps telling us God can never forsake or abandon us. Can we draw inspiration from the faith, humility, and patience of this Canaanite woman? MATTHEW 15:21-28; WEDNESDAY, 18TH WEEK
