HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR B.

HOMILY THEME: CURING SICKNESS; FORGIVING SINS

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk. 5:17-26)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus cures a paralyzed man who, because of difficulty in bringing him in to Jesus who is being sought by so many people, was lowered from the roof. In the cure, Jesus included forgiveness of the sick man’s sin. This drew some objections and questions from Pharisees and teachers of the law. To them He was committing blasphemy.

Actually, He was not because He was the Son of God. Also, He was communicating what every Jew knew which is, most sicknesses are caused by sins. Thus, curing the sickness means forgiving the sins. Come to think of it. Nature has its way. God, indeed, is wise. The consequences of sins are sicknesses. Not all but most. This can be an immediate and good reason not to sin.

However, more than sickness, the lost of heaven and the pains are the utmost reason why we must not sin. Being with God should be enough to make us happy and contented. Separating from God more than the pains of hell should make us feel very sad and experience a deep sense of loss.

In this season of Advent, it is good to reflect on the condition of our body and soul. Are we ailing? It might be connected with our sin. Are we sinning? We might be experiencing sickness. Let us keep holy to be healthy. Health is not only wealth. It is also holiness.
