HOMILY FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: JESUS THE ATONING SACRIFICE FOR OUR SINS

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike CM

“For there is no other name giving in heaven or on the earth by which we can be saved but the name of Jesus” (Acts 4, 12). The name of “Jesus” signifies the person of Jesus Christ. What the blood of animals of various kinds could not achieve, Jesus achieved for us through his blood; washing our sins away with his blood, shed on the cross of Calvary, and declaring at the same time: “it is finished” (Jn 19, 30).

St Paul is very clear in today’s second reading when he described him as “the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world”(1 Jn 2,2). Now it is important to note that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was chiefly to atone for our sins and to reconcile us with God the Father. This is because sin basically separates us from God, keeping us at an unholy distance with him, making us vulnerable and a willing tool for the evil one to use- at will.

One of the gains of the paschal mystery is the victory of good over evil and the defeat of sin and death by Jesus’ death and resurrection. This assures us that sin has no power over us. That is, that even when we fall into sin we are not meant to remain in sin, for sin is opposed to the will of God for us. God’s desire for us is that we come to know him by keeping his commandments And through keeping his commands become perfect children of his that he has loved so much, by sending his only begotten son to die as an atonement for our sins (1 Jn 2, 5; Jn 3, 16). We pray for the grace to hear the word of God and keep it so as to stay free from sin and all forms of wrong doings.

We pray too that we may have the humble and contrite spirit to approach God when we fall into sin to obtain his mercy through his son Jesus Christ, who is our atonement with the Father.

Have a blessed week
