HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

HOMILY THEME: WHO ARE YOU?

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 1:19-28)
In the day’s Gospel, John clarified who is the precursor and who is the Messiah, the one who will prepare and the one expected to come, and the prophet and the saviour.

It was a great temptation for John to grab the limelight, the title, and the honour from Jesus. But he knew better. He knew that he has a role to play in order for God’s plan to be realised. He knew that Jesus has a vital mission to do.John knew who he was. Jesus also knew who He was. Knowing ourselves is very important to live life meaningfully and fruitfully.

The three basic questions we need to ask ourselves are;
Who am I?
What is my purpose in life?
What is my destiny?

The answer to these questions determine the life we will live. We are persons created by God. We owe our lives to Him. Having established that, our purpose follows; we should live according to the will of God. Our lives are guided by the teachings of Jesus, the Gospel values, the ways towards holiness. Then, we realise our destiny which is to join God in His Kingdom. It is but fitting that the one who created us and sustained us will be our destiny.

The plan of God, if you will notice, was fulfilled because those given a role played them with dedication and in faith. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the magi, the angels, the shepherds, John, Zechariah, Elizabeth, and even the prophets and those belonging in the lineage of Jesus were true to their assigned mission. It did not end in Jesus. The apostles, disciples, early Christians, saints and the present Christians continue the plan. Salvation continues to happen. Christians continue to live their roles.

It is good to ask again the questions; Who am I?
What is my purpose in life?
What is my destiny?
