We celebrate today the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart is a symbol for love and devotion, so today’s readings focus on the love God has for those whom God has called to be in relationship with the Godhead. This loving relationship is manifested in God’s dealings with the Chosen people, the Israelites of old, and those who have come to believe in God’s only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

In the first reading (Deut. 7: 6-11), Moses reminds the Israelites to remember that God chose them not because they are great or so important, but because of God’s love for them. “This unconditional love for an inconsequential nation is what God is all about.” All that is expected of the “Chosen People” is to remain faithful to the covenantal relationship, obedience to God.

In the gospel (Matt. 11: 25-30), Jesus thanks the Father for choosing to reveal the knowledge of God to the simple hearted, “the little ones,” and not the proud of heart.

Dear friends, the journey from the head to the heart is like the distance between heaven and earth. If we know God only at the level of the intellect without knowing God from the depth of the seat of love, the heart, then we are not yet in a relationship with God. It is only love that comes from the heart that can knock down walls and build bridges to create peace. From the heart of our Redeemer flows the inexhaustible source of new life. Am I ready to love others selflessly as God has loved me in Christ?

I pray as we journey in life today, we will adore the Heart of our Redeemer and discover how much He loves us, and with such enthusiasm, may we love one another and seek reconciliation (Rom. 5: 5-11). Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Have mercy on us! Have a mercy-full day!
