SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT, HOMILY – YEAR B

THEME: DON’T HANG ON THE GLORY, THERE IS A TEST UNDER

BY: FR LIVINUS C. IGBODEKWE

People often like to identify with “made men” not with men under the making. We do not like clay but when they are used in making plates, pots, vases, we pay to have them. We all desire the blessings of Abraham, but not all can go through the tests of Abraham. We desire to be like Jesus but we don’t desire his sufferings. We like to see glory without paying the price of the glory. The four disciples saw the glory of God and of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration and wanted to hang on it without coming down. They didn’t know that the transfiguration was just a heavenly advert of the glory they shall receive together with Jesus if they would suffer and die with Him.

Moses and Elijah were men of unprecedented gifting mused as the greatest of the prophets who shall come again. They actually did come again in day of the Son of God who shall fulfill both the Law and the Prophets. Peter wanted to remain under the cloud of glory by suggesting to have three booths built for Jesus, Moses and Elijah, but he did not perceive that glory has not come in fullness because the Christ will have to suffer and die and rise from the dead. This is the hard pill Peter found difficult to swallow. But that is always the reality of Christian living. We cannot have what we cannot die for. We cannot possess what we did not fight for.
Abraham will have to go through 12 tests from God to prove a point – “Now I know that you fear God.” The last of the tests was the most challenging. Abraham passed the test and the blessings came not only on him but upon generations after him.
Pay the price and reap the glory!
