THURSDAY: HOMILY FOR 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME / YEAR B
THEME: The Redemptive Power of True Friendship
BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa
In our first reading (1 Samuel 18:6–9 and 19:1–7), we behold the radiant exemplar of David and Jonathan’s friendship, a bond that transcends earthly ties and magnifies the power of true Christian friendship. This unlikely union between a future king and a prince teaches us that shared faith and values can supersede social status and background, fostering a deep and abiding connection.

Jonathan and David’s strong bond was built on admiration and mutual respect. They prioritized each other’s needs, with Jonathan advocating for David before his father, Saul, and helping him escape danger. Their selfless love and loyalty show the redemptive power of relationships built on shared faith and values.
True Christian friendship, like that of David and Jonathan, reflects God’s love and grace in our lives. It involves embracing others in their imperfections, supporting them in their struggles, and encouraging them in their walk with God. It requires vulnerability, empathy, and selflessness, just as Christ showed us in His ministry and ultimate sacrifice.
As we reflect on the friendship between Jonathan and David and our own friendships, let us embody the qualities of true Christian friendship, embracing vulnerability, empathy, and selflessness, just as Christ showed us in His ministry and ultimate sacrifice. May we strive to build relationships that reflect the love and grace of God, like David and Jonathan, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
