WEDNESDAY HOMILY: 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

THEME: COURAGE TO USE OUR GIFTS

LUKE 19:11-28;

Nothing worse than opportunities wasted! Jesus tells a parable of a nobleman who was traveling to a far country and gave his three servants ten pounds and said to them, “Trade with these till I come.” When he returned the three servants gave reports. The first servant reported a gain of ten more pounds; the second announced a profit of five more pounds; the third came trembling, grumbling, and complaining, saying he gained nothing from the pound given to him because he was afraid of his master. He lost a precious opportunity offered to him and his pound was taken away and given to the first who made ten more pounds.

Jesus gave a shocking remark at the end of the parable: “…To everyone who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” Jesus challenges people to use or lose their gifts. He teaches us the importance of exercising our gifts generously and courageously to the honour and glory of God. We must not behave like the third servant in wasting our gifts, graces, treasures, time, talents, beauty, strength, intellectual power, skills, and abilities. The joy of a fulfilled life is to be fruitful, multiply, and make progress in exercising our gifts. Fear is a roadblock against progress. Are we crippled by fear of starting a new venture and fear of using our gifts valuably?
