YEAR A: 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER HOMILY 2023

HOMILY THEME: The Coming of the Holy Spirit

HOMILY: (Jn. 14:15-21) Sixth Sunday of Easter

In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, which the Father will send to us once Jesus goes back to the Father. It was an assurance of Jesus constant presence. Jesus reminded the apostles to continue following the commandments for that is the sign of their right journey to where He was going. It will be an experience of true peace.

Jesus has fulfilled His mission. The time of the Holy Spirit had come. We will celebrate it on Pentecost Sunday. Meanwhile we reflect on its mission. Jesus refers to it as an Advocate. It means Counselor, Defender, or a Lawyer for us. In the same way that lawyers give the best legal advices, the Holy Spirit gives excellent spiritual advices. This, as Jesus had commanded, we must take heed of His teachings. The Holy Spirit will be our light and guide to always be aware of Jesus’ teachings.

True peace will be its result. The peace that comes from Jesus and not from this world. If we call on the Spirit and follow its inspirations, we will remain in God and attain true peace. True peace is being one with God. True peace is being in God’s favor. No amount of riches, fame, and power can gain that for us. Only when we are reconciled and faithful to God will we have true peace.

The challenge now is to recognize the presence and work of the Spirit. It had been given to us when we were baptized and summoned when we were confirmed. The Spirit is in us. If we heed it we are in true peace. If not, it is time to free it from imprisonment in our hearts. Shake it loose and let it come alive in us. Then we will see the changes inside. We will be more discerning, courageous, and peaceful. Do not look somewhere out there. We have it all along.
