HOMILY THEME: WHAT IS YOUR FOUNDATION
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
(Mt. 7:21-29) Thursday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time
In the day’s Gospel Jesus used the analogy of a house built on rock and another on sand to illustrate the effect of following and not following the will of God.
Earlier, Jesus criticised those who only pay lip service to God. Mere speaking the faith does not constitute strength in faith. It is by following the will of the Father that a solid foundation is established.
Jesus stresses the importance of following the will of God. There are a lot of wills trying to win our consent. There are a lot of voices whispering or shouting in our ears begging to be followed. There are a lot trying to win our will for their own interests. Whose interest are we willing to satisfy? Whose will must we embrace?
Time had proven that the will of the world; world of money, world of fame, world of power, world of relationships etc. are fleeting and limited. They are like houses built on sand which collapse and are ruined. In the face of sickness, failures, disputes, disagreements, obscurity, poverty, and death, the world has no reliable answer. On the other hand, God’s will; faith, hope, love, justice, peace, contentment, sacrifice, joy, etc., responds, face adversities head-on, and prevails. They are limitless, enduring, and effective.
Following God’s will does not meant hat we will not be subjected to difficulties, tests, and challenges. it means that we are assured of the best response as far as God is concerned. If it is God’s concern, it must be the best!
