2ND SUNDAY: HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B)

THEME: “Come and See”: Following the Lord

BY: Fr Anthony Chukwuebuka Ohaekwusi

What makes a person decide to become someone’s spouse is more serious and special than mere pleasure. Something happens to you in a way that makes you feel that ‘this is the one’ and I must give my whole self. There is a strong belief and conviction that your life will be better if you are with this person, and for this reason you will always want to share special moments with this person to create lasting memories for a lifetime. There is an uncertainty that creates anxiety, and at the same time a curiosity that makes you want more. You would like to know everything about the person, their family, home, hobbies, worries, likes and dislikes. This desire plunges a person into a love relationship that goes beyond sexual feelings. Every relationship begins with a direct or indirect encounter that initiates a passionate interest in our hearts that keeps calling for a response. it is true that someone introduces us to someone or something we love today. This person could be a relative, friend, colleague, boss, teacher, child or student. Our relationship with God is no different. We get to know God through an encounter that makes us want to know Him and love Him more. But it all started when someone pointed at Him to us.

The readings of this second Sunday call us to reflect on our small beginnings, to identify those special people and moments that inspired our special relationship with God. We didn’t start loving God out of nowhere. Someone or something led us to Him. Anna brought her son Samuel to the temple to be mentored by the priest Eli. Eli pointed Samuel in the right direction toward God, and Samuel listened and followed. John the Baptist did the same for his disciples, they listened and followed him. Andrew led his brother Peter to Jesus, and Peter also listened and followed him. In all these cases, we see that our relationship with God begins with the small relationship we have now, and the key to this deeper relationship is to listen and follow the guidance of the Johns and Elis of our lives, who lead us in a direction that changes our lives for the better, much more so than in a marriage relationship. Then our bodies will become a temple of God, not an object of pleasure, because it is this encounter that gives our lives meaning, as in the case of Peter, who after meeting Jesus became a Cephas – a rock of faith.

Remain lifted and do have a great Sunday.
