3RD SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: “REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOOD NEWS”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 3rd Sunday in ordinary time Yr. B. Our Lord Jesus Christ began preaching and proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom. He beckons on all humanity to REPENT. This means he saw that humanity is heading to ruin if things remain the way they are now. “The time has come he said and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent and believe the Good News” (Mk.1:24-20). There is need to reform our lives now, time waits for nobody.

Earlier before Jesus came, the prophet Jona preached the same message to the people of Nineveh . They were given 40 days to reform or else they perish. They acknowledged their guilt . “They proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least” (Jona 3:1-5.10). They acted fast and God relented in his anger and spared their lives.

In our world today evil is falling down like rain everyday. The social media is filled with bad news hourly. No one is giving a thought to what may befall the world of our time. Paul is reminding us of the need to make a “U” turn. “Brothers: our time is growing short” (1Cor. 7:29-31). We are being sustained by the mercy of God. But if we remain adamant in our evil ways, the future is insecure. Now is the time to listen and reform our lives before it’s too late. Happy Sunday.
