HOMILY FOR 26TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR (A)

Follow Christ

HOMILY FOR 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME -YEAR (A)

BY: FR. CAJETHAN ANYANWU

HOMILY THEME: MY BOY, YOU GO AND WORK IN THE VINEYARD TODAY”

This is the 26th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. A). The challenge before us as Christians is to be firm in our resolve to follow Christ and do what he commands us to do. The task to do what the Lord commands does not admit pretence or deceit. A straightforward person is the type the Lord loves. Our duty as straightforward persons requires us to say “yes” when we mean yes and “no” when we mean no. Anyone who mixes up ‘yes’ and ‘no’ at the same time is unjust. This is why the Lord asked the prophet Ezekiel to issue this warning: “Listen, you house of Israel: is what l do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust?”(Ezk.18:25-28).

To be unjust means that we have wondered away from the right direction. When we realize our mistakes and come back to God, we receive forgiveness. For the Lord says: ” When the sinner renounces sin to become law-abiding and honest, he deserves to live.” To renounce one’s sin requires humility. This means to become Christ-like. For, “His state was devine, yet he did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave…” (Phil. 2:1-11). Humility is not weakness but doing what is right.

When the man said to his son, “my boy, you go and work in the vineyard today” (Mtt. 21:28-32), he wanted a definite answer. Although the first son objected, but he later repented and went to do the work. He realized his mistakes and resolved to go and do what his father commanded him to do. But the second son was adamant, deceptive and dubious in character. His “yes” meant “no” and his no meant yes. He never repented . He deceived his own father. Let us pray to be humble and to do what the Lord wants us to do, amen. Happy Sunday.
