HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: EMBRACING THE MINISTRY OF SERVICE—FOLLOWING JESUS’ EXAMPLE

BY: Fr. Francis Onwunali

The mission of Jesus is to serve and not to be served, even to the point of giving His life as a ransom for many (cf. Matt. 20: 28). The readings of today are calling on all of us to be part of this ministry of service, caring for one another in words and action.

The first reading (Acts 6: 1-7) narrates the establishment of the diakonoi – “servants” “ministers” (deacons) to care for the needs of the people of God in collaboration with the Apostles as co-workers in the salvation of souls. By virtue of our baptism, we have been called and gifted for service in words and deeds. It is not a question of if we are called to serve, but where.
Jesus gave us an example in the gospel (John 6: 16-21). Having fed the five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish, He came to the rescue of His disciples who were battling with storm of the Sea of Galilee and helped them to the shore. Jesus is always near to render help at every situation of our life, even when He seemed distant from our life situations.
Dear friends, as followers of Jesus, the world around us will remain in darkness unless we serve as beacons of light. No one is above or below rendering help. Do not always seek to receive rather reach out to give a helping hand to lift someone to the shore of happiness and glory.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will use our blessings – gifts and talents – to serve the people around us. May we hear the words of Jesus: when you cared for the little ones, you did it to me (cf. Matt. 25). May we never lack as we care and serve others. Have a caring-full day!
