HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY – YEAR B

THEME: RECOGNISING JESUS

BY: ‘But they were not able to recognise who he was.’ Luke 24:16

One of human tragedies is our inability to know who God is and what He can do. When we face a crisis it’s easy for us to lose perspective. It happened to two of Jesus’ disciples on the Emmaus Road. Discouraged about His death, they were ‘going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their…questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. But they were not able to recognise who He was.’ Not able to recognize Him comes in different forms.

When we take our eyes off Jesus and are blind to His power, we can start to feel helpless about our situation. And even when we are trying to keep focused on Jesus, we can’t always see Him clearly. Our situation and emotions cloud our vision and we get a distorted picture. But God can bring breakthrough moments in our lives if we understand who He is and what He can do in the light of His words and Sacraments. He can help us to see things clearly, to have perspective and to not become overwhelmed.

When the disciples on the Emmaus Road were focused on their problems, they didn’t recognise Jesus. But everything changed the minute the disciples did recognise Him. ‘Within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There…the two…told…how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along…and how they had recognised him as He was breaking the bread.’ They went from fear to courage, pain to joy, and despair to hope. Paul wrote, ‘I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened’ (Ephesians 1:18). When we stop focusing on the problem and fix our eyes on Jesus and His power, we get 20/20 vision and are filled with the courage, joy and hope we need to get through the situation. Our whole perspective is transformed when we have that Emmaus Road experience of recognising Jesus in the middle of what we are going through. As you are walking, ask God to show you where He is in the situation you are facing at the moment. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God heal our world and bless us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning!
