MONDAY HOMILY, 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A
THEME: JESUS RESTORES HEALTH
BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA
LUKE 13:10-17:
Evoking the wisdom of generations, a proverb states,
“He who conceals his disease cannot expect to be cured.” Many sick people who disclosed their illnesses to Jesus were cured. “And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, ‘Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.’ And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God” (Luke 13:11-13).

Having a spirit of infirmity implies having a stubborn physical sickness that is caused and sustained by spiritual forces. Expectedly, the leader of the synagogue was unhappy that Jesus was healing on the Sabbath, and Jesus responded, “And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” (Luke 13:16).
Jesus liberated her not only from her physical pains but also from the emotional and psychological pains she suffered. She endured rejection and shabby treatment from insensitive people. Jesus treated her with dignity and restored her health and dignity and she was able to stand straight again. He calls her a daughter of Abraham to emphasise her human dignity.
Are we aware that we are also called to participate in the healing and liberation mission of Christ in a world where many suffer the spirit of infirmity?
