TUESDAY HOMILY: 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A)

THEME: Who’ll Feast at God’s Table?

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Rom. 12:5-16; Luke 14:15-24

In Nigeria today, due to the harsh economic climate, many will rush to a wedding reception just for the food, without being specifically invited. Then imagine some folks turning down an important wedding invitation for not too serious reasons. Jesus’ story about the wedding feast was in response to the man among those who sat at table with him who said, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!” When this man spoke of the happiness of those who would be guests at God’s banquet he was thinking of Jews, and of Jews only, for the average, orthodox Jew would never have dreamed that gentiles and sinners would find a place at the feast of God. That is why Jesus used this parable.

Friends, just as the first reading reminds us today, God has given his people many good gifts, and these spiritual gifts transcend ethnicity, politics, economic status, etc. These gifts bring us together, rather than separate us. Though many of the Jews who had already accepted God’s invitation later turned him down for secular reasons, God went ahead, and still goes ahead to extend his invitation to tax collectors, sinners, and ordinary folks like us, who are ready to respond to the invitation to feast at his table. So if you’re a preacher, please preach, if you’re a prophet, prophesy… Above all, let love be genuine as we extend the invitation to God’s kingdom to everyone we meet. Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
