HOMILY FOR 4TH SUNDAY IN LENT / YEAR B

THEME: “THE SON OF MAN MUST BE LIFTED UP”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 4th Sunday of Lent (Yr.B). Traditionally, it is known as Laetare or joyous Sunday. This is because, our prayer, fasting and almsgiving have been yielding positive results. God has seen our remose and his mercy has come upon us. Prior to the Lenten season we had gone astray and exiled ourselves from the kingdom. “All the heads of the priesthood, and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, copying all the shameful practices of the nations..” (2 Chro. 36:14-16, 29-23). This is the time for us to come back to God for his grace is sufficient for us.

Since God’s merciful love abides with us, we should not relax, rather we must intensify our efforts in doing good always. “God loved us with so much love that he was generous with his mercy: when we were dead through our sins, he brought us to life with Christ” (Eph. 2:4-10). This shows that God sent his Son as a role model for us all to emulate. Following Jesus implies doing his will and not ours.

In doing his will we shall be lifted up like him. “The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him (Jn. 3:14-21). To believe is to trust, to follow and to serve with a sincere heart. Those who follow Jesus sincerely are not living in the dark. They are following the light that enlightens every aspect of their lives. Only the evil-doers prefer darkness to the light. .May the light of Christ illumine our heart to follow the
right part, amen. Happy Sunday.
