THEME: REMOVING THE VEIL!

BY: Benedict Agbo (Rev Fr).

* 2 Cor 3: 15 – 4: 6, Matt 5: 20 – 26.

Spiritual theology from the perspective of Christianity is a gradual process of removing the veil of the Old Testament dispensation of the law and ushering in the new era of grace through the revelation of the Word of God by the fellowship with the Holy Spirit. To be a Christian is to be continually transformed into the image of Christ through the Holy Spirit. It requires a daily submission to the will of Christ through his Word that works this inward change.

The whole sermon on the mountain contains the advanced spiritual discipline of controlling anger, foul speech, quarrels, lustful thoughts, immorality, divorce, oath taking, wrong praying, materialism, judgment, hypocrisy, etc. to a point of exceeding the spirituality of the Scribes, Pharisees, Saducees, Herodians, Zealots, and all the theological sects of the time. Today, Christ still expects our righteousness to exceed that of the Academia/intelligentsia, the Atheists, Eckhists, Rosicrucians, the Muslims, Buddhists, Hinduists, ATR, Grail messengers, etc. But what we are seeing today is the opposite. The emphasis have not been on morality but on prosperity preaching and deliverance. Christians are not determined to outshine others in virtue but only make the noise while others live the life. Is it that Christianity does not have the best of teachings and spiritual principles? Of course not. According to Gilbert Keith Chesterton, ‘Christianity is not a failure but just has never been tried’.

If Christians were to download just the teachings of the Sermon on the Mountain, Matt 5 – 7 and break them down to their intricate moral implications, making concerted effort to apply these teachings to their lives, our level of spirituality will experience a tremendous leap. Today’s 1st reading makes it clear that we are supposed to be morally transformed gradually through the working of the Holy Spirit removing the veil of our past ignorance and spiritual slavery and setting us onto the freedom of the Children of God empowered by the light of Christ. It is not an impossible project – just that we have not embarked on it conscientiously. What we do not know is that the fastest route to prosperity and deliverance is moral empowerment. Many want to dethrone the devil first (through prayer) to allow them prosper not knowing that allowing the grace of God to work out righteousness in our moral lives (still through prayer) would be a faster shortcut. May God bless you today!
