HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY 7TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

James 4:13-17; Psalm 48(49):2-3,6-11; Mark 9:38-40

My Morning Minute With Jesus

St. James teaches us real life lessons. “Man proposes but God disposes” is a common adage, because we do not have absolute control over the shaping of our lives and plans. So, a godly person must plan and prepare for the future by anchoring his/her plans on God, not on selfish material securities. That is because the next moment and the depth of the unforeseeable future only come about by the grace of God or God-willing. While planning, we must be mindful of the mistake of rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 and shun the lifestyle of self-conceited folks, who are drunk and overconfident with arrogance and human pride, for as the Psalmist says, “they will die like the animals” (Psalm 49:20). The only moment we have is NOW; let us use it wisely. The next minute is not ours until it is given; let us long for it with due respect and thanksgiving to God, the giver of life and Lord of time.

Today’s gospel invites us to focus on what unites us and stop using religion, the Name of Christ and other valuable elements of human endeavor, to establish divisions and marginalization. Quite often, people cluelessly arrogate powers to themselves to decide whom God blesses or curses. God blesses whom He wishes; loves us all and does not discriminate. We must, however, endear ourselves to such divine blessings by disposing ourselves through a good relationship with God and neighbor. Part of such good relationship is being bridge builders instead of people who thrive on strife, division and relegation of people who are different from us. Remarkably, the Spirit of God may also be working outside our little circles, sometimes in unexpected peoples and circumstances. Jesus’ acceptance that even those who did not belong to his immediate group should have the freedom to express their belief in Him must be taken seriously by Christian denominations, who must stop rubbishing and fighting each other and instead take advantage of our common heritage to stem the worldwide battle against Christianity. Let us spend our energy on spreading the gospel and let our only adversary be our common enemy; the devil and his agents.

Father, unite us in Christ. Amen.
